So here’s the deal. I don’t usually predict this because I am always wrong. As most people who predict them all. I just tend to be more wrong. Because I have seen everything nominated for all comedy, drama, and limited series categories. And the voters haven’t. And while I’m trying to think objectively with what this crowd would vote, I can’t. So when I say will win on all of these I mean “will possibly maybe kind of I don’t know I’m guessing.” K? Cool.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Will Win: “Veep” (HBO)
Should Win: “The Good Place” (NBC)
The fact that The Good Place is even nominated is amazing in itself. The fact that it’s surrounded by comedies that are actually good and for the most part actually fun nearly a miracle. Bottom line, Good Place is the best show on TV, but Veep has the prestige in a world where politics is horrible, so give them a nice goodbye.
Outstanding Drama Series
Will Win: “Game of Thrones” (HBO)
Should Win: “This Is Us” (NBC)
While none of these shows are practically bad (except possibly Thrones), but none are the most entertaining to me. I would call them all fine. But with as many nominees as it has and the scope of the show even horrible writing can’t ruin Thrones’ reign. To be clear, This Is Us doesn’t necessarily deserve this either for this lackluster season, but it did for season 1 and didn’t.
Outstanding Limited Series
Will Win: “Chernobyl” (HBO)
Should Win: “When They See Us” (Netflix)
This is a tossup, but as one of the few people who didn’t love Chernobyl I’m trying to put my bias aside. A bunch of British people playing Russians while still being 100% British seems odd and the lack of real character depth didn’t do it for me. When They See Us may not have been the best written, but was eye opening, well acted, and just great. Hoping for that upset.
Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Should Win: Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”)
Will Win: Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”)
Don’t really care about this category. Billy Porter might get it, but since he’s not even a lead I refuse to predict it. Going with Milo because he did war stuff, but by far the best actor is and always has been Odenkirk.
Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win: Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”)
Should Win: Mandy Moore (“This Is Us”)
Bless her heart for acting that garbage, Emilia you deserve this. But Mandy is the best part of This Is Us and happy she finally got nominated.
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Will Win: Chris Sullivan (“This Is Us”)
Should Win: Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau (“Game of Thrones”)
Again a category I don’t care about really. Everyone is just fine. I really wish we could combine male and female actors into one category so we stop nominating subpar acting just because it’s all that’s there when the female actors are always way better, but I get it: misogyny. So much Thrones and Better Call Saul actors who aren’t that good splitting the vote, seems like Chris Sullivan could sneak in. Guys, he played depressed. But I rather liked Nikolaj, who also had to act through writing that made no sense and did a decent job.
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Will Win: Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones”)
Should Win: Julia Garner (“Ozark”)
I don’t love Ozark, but Julia Garner is by far the best part and she’s gotten a lot of love in other nominations recently. She could very well win especially with all that vote splitting, but Christie’s self submission was such a story, I feel like the same thing with Tiffany Haddish winning guest actress last year when she had to submit herself might lead to a lot of sympathy votes. And she is pretty fantastic, but again such bad writing to act through. I just felt sorry for her.
Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win: Bill Hader (“Barry”)
Should Win: Ted Danson (“The Good Place”)
Bill Hader is great, but he won last year. Give it to Ted. What’s that? You don’t want to? Fine, Hader it is.
Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”)
Should Win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”)
Catherine O’Hara is great. I would love to see her win. But anyone who wants to take away the 7th and final award from Julia that she downright deserves at this point. She is by far the best, has won when she didn’t necessarily deserve it, does this year, went through cancer, and has a chance to win 7 awards for every season of a show. That’s unheard of and let’s make it happen.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Will Win: Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
Should Win: Anthony Carrigan (“Barry”)
I think Anthony Carrigan has a real shot, but so does Henry Winkler again. So instead let’s go with Tony Shalhoub, who I think is not funny in the least, but he seems like a person and has won awards before.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Will Win: Olivia Colman (“Fleabag”)
Should Win: Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”)
I love Olivia Colamn. I don’t think this is her best role. I don’t think she’s the best part of the show, where as Borstein is, but since she’s already won and Emmys like to act like they are on par with the Oscars, Olivia Colman make some room on your shelf.
Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Will Win: Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”)
Should Win: Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”)
With that final When They See Us alone, I don’t know how anyone can consider anyone else. So why talk about it?
Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Will Win: Patricia Arquette (“Escape at Dannemora”)
Should Win: Patricia Arquette (“Escape at Dannemora”)
This is tough. A lot of people are great, but Patricia Arquette was fantastic and has already picked a lot of other awards for this. Let’s give her one more.
Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Will Win: Patricia Clarkson (“Sharp Objects”)
Should Win: Patricia Arquette (“The Act”)
I’m not obsessed with Patricia Arquette by any means, but she’s so good in this as well. Maybe she’ll win, but I think the other Patricia might take this. Even though it was over a year ago and people forgot. Who knows? I just feel like people won’t want to reward an Arquette twice and she’s much better in Dannemora.
Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Will Win: Stellan Skarsgård (“Chernobyl”)
Should Win: Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal”)
While still being British, he was pretty good. Maybe it will go to a When They See Us, but I doubt it. I feel like Chernobyl has to get some stuff to justify winning limited series over When They Us. But maybe they won’t and I’m completely wrong. Still Whishaw was the best, but I doubt voters saw it.
Variety Talk Series
Will Win: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” (HBO)
Should Win: “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” (TBS)
I have seen bits of all the shows, but every episode of Samantha Bee, and I think it’s by far the best. But since this award is actually which show reminds us most of The Daily Show, we know who will win… again.
Television Movie
Will Win: “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” (Netflix)
Should Win: Nothing. This category should not exist.
I have only seen King Lear and that won’t win. I know people say Bandersnatch isn’t great, but it got nominated and Black Mirror has won before here, so let’s do it. But honestly when you have a category full of things that aren’t good or people haven’t seen. Maybe just maybe think about restructuring. All of the other awards for TV Movie are combined with limited series. And not a single TV movie got nominated for acting, writing, or directing. So just combine this as well and that I won’t have to feel bad about missing out an entire category.
Competition Program
Will Win: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” (VH1)
Should Win: “Top Chef” (Bravo)
Haven’t seen much of RuPaul in general and none of this season, but the awards people love it. Top Chef is the best reality competition show though and I watch a lot of them.
Variety Sketch Series
Will Win: “Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
Should Win: “Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
I’ve only seen SNL on this, and I really didn’t like this season, but I don’t really love sketch, so let’s just be done.
*The end. If I get 10 write, I will consider me a great predictor.*
